BALI SAUNA

The Herbal Ritual

Ubud takes its name from the Balinese word ubad — medicine, the healing herbs. At BALI SAUNA Ubud, the sauna is an apothecary. From a shelf of more than fifteen Balinese herbs, you choose your own mix and pack it into a tea bag with your own hands. We brew that bag into a strong, concentrated herbal tea — and the tea becomes your löyly, poured over the stones of the 90°C dome. Most saunas scent their steam with synthetic aroma oils; here it is the opposite: real herbs, really extracted, chosen by you. A herbal steam you can only taste here, in the town named after herbs. Then the 17°C and 5°C plunges.

How it works

  1. Browse the shelf — more than fifteen Balinese herbs; choose by scent, by mood, or ask us
  2. Pack your chosen herbs into your own tea bag, with your own hands
  3. We brew it strong — a concentrated herbal tea, not an aroma oil
  4. The tea is poured over the stones: your löyly. Breathe in the dome, then plunge — 17°C first, 5°C when ready
  5. Rest by the fire pit under the trees, then repeat

The herbs

Pegagan (gotu kola)the calm one — Bali's everyday leaf for mind and skin

Kayu putih (cajeput)the clear one — camphor-bright, opens the breath

Boreh blendthe warm one — the traditional Balinese warming spice paste, as steam

For sauna people

If Aufguss is theatre and löyly is silence, the Balinese herbal ritual is a third thing: a prescription. It is closest to the old bathhouse traditions where the herbs were the point — and it only exists here because the herbs grow here.
